Some Curiosities Seen At Home.

Florida has a bit of reputation as being home to things that are a little different and offbeat.   In the normal course of commerce and going about our business, we don't normally encounter the offfbeat,   but everyone now and then,  we see something special. Enjoy.

No,  this is not a foreign country, and you don't need your US passport, this is the sign that greets passengers deplaning in Key West to the main terminal. Key West is the capital of the self styled "Conch Republic", which has its own flag.  The name stems from  a time in the 1980s when customs and border protection wanted to set up a check point o n US 1 in the Keys and the denizens of the Keys considered that as long as they were going to be treated as a foreign country, they might as well be one.

Wastewater Plant Operator's office at a Department of Corrections facility in the Florida Panhandle.  It was told to us that in the 1950s this was a sweatbox where recalictrant inmates were said to be punished in.  Can't say if thats true, but it makes for a great plant operator's office.

The building in the background is a Staate rest area building along I-75 south of Gainesville.  The sign in the foreground reads, "Beware of Poisonous Snakes". (It might be better to just keep on going and hit the  restroom  at the McDonalds in Ocala

Florida is home to some great food, and Southern barbecue is my favorite.  Atop the roof of this establishment  is a giant pig.  The white thing sticking out the posterior end  of said pig is a thermometer.  And, it was smoking. This is how we know the food is good and properly cooked here.

Over the course of a long career in engineering, I have found its best not to argue against something that demonstrably works. Most of the time.

The car in front is NOT pulling a boat on a trailer.  That is a boat hull that has been surgically  implanted on an automobile frame.
